Questions worth asking before you hire anyone
These are the answers we give on the phone every week. If yours is not here, ask it — we answer enquiries even when they do not become engagements.
Fees & engagement
We quote a fixed fee for a defined scope wherever the work allows it — registrations, drafting and filings almost always do. For litigation we quote stage by stage, so you always know the cost of the next step rather than facing an open-ended total. Government fees and statutory charges are listed separately, at cost, so nothing is buried inside a professional fee.
The first fifteen minutes are free and carry no obligation. That is enough time for us to understand your situation, tell you whether you have a viable position, and set out what acting on it would involve. If we need longer to give you a useful answer, we will say so before any charge arises.
You will hear it from us before you pay anything. We would rather decline an engagement than accept a fee for a matter that was never going to succeed. Where the position is merely difficult rather than hopeless, we will explain precisely what would need to change for it to improve.
Yes, and it is more common than you might expect. We will review what has already been filed, identify anything that needs correcting, and handle the formalities of transferring the matter. Bring whatever papers you have, even if the set is incomplete.
Process & timelines
Urgent matters such as bail applications, or a notice with a limitation period about to close, are triaged the same day. If you are working to a deadline within 72 hours, call us rather than sending an email — the phone is genuinely faster and we would rather hear from you early than perfectly.
You receive an update at every milestone — filing, listing, hearing and order — written in plain language rather than procedural shorthand. At closure you get a note recording what was achieved and anything you need to do afterwards, such as a renewal or follow-up filing.
Bring any notice, summons or order you have received, along with the underlying agreement, deed, invoice or account statement. Photo identity and address proof are needed for most filings. If something is missing or lost, tell us early — there is almost always a lawful route to reconstructing or substituting it.
Coverage & confidentiality
Yes. Registrations, compliance and advisory work are handled nationwide and entirely remotely. For matters that require a court appearance outside our home jurisdiction, we co-ordinate with vetted local counsel and remain your single point of contact throughout, so you are never left managing two sets of advisers.
Rarely. Most registration, compliance and advisory work is completed remotely, with documents exchanged digitally. Personal attendance is generally needed only where a statute or the court expressly requires it — for example at a sub-registrar's office — and we tell you well in advance when that applies.
Yes. Everything you share is treated as privileged and confidential, including during an initial enquiry that never becomes an engagement. We do not share enquiry details with third parties, and we do not use the specifics of your matter in marketing without your written consent.
Ask it directly — a straight answer costs you nothing
If your question is not covered above, send it over. We reply to enquiries whether or not they turn into engagements.
